research- digipaks.

We have to create a digipak as part of our task, it will have to relate to the track we are doing a music video on and also on the genre. I have decided to analyse a few digipaks to help me understand them a lot more.

A digipak is a type of packaging made out of cardboard which protects either a CD or DVD, as we are doing a CD cover I will be researching into different CD digipaks. Digipaks can open several ways they can have 3 panels which fold up or just simply open like a book. Where the actual CD is there is a piece of plastic to hold it in. Digipaks were first created by a company called Meadwestvaco.

Here is my analysis of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream digipak:

media talk- planning ideas.

Yesterday we had a little interview with Mr Wallis about our plans for our music video. This has helped us to express our ideas and get feedback as well. We now know we are on the right track for our music video and just need to start with the planning and hopefully get everything finished on time.

This is the video of us expressing our ideas and we are hoping to get some feedback which may aid us along the way:

research- record labels with genres similar to ours.

A record label is something which signs different artists, they maintain their contracts as artists and allows them to publish their own songs and the enforcement for copyright for music videos. They distribute recorded music and promote it.

Artists are relient upon record labels as they help widen their audience so they become more popular, record labels are a big help for many artists. There are four big record labels which are; Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI.

research- lighting we will use.

A typical convention of our genre would be that they use quite a lot of lighting whilst filming to give it that urban look so we were thinking about what lighting we were going to use in our music video and we decided we would maybe hire some professional lighting for our video to make the effect of the video look a lot better. We were thinking of hiring something like this:

Also Rachel recently went out shopping and spotted some 'DIY' lights we could use in the video to make it look a lot more effective, we want to make our video look as good as we can and we'd like to experiment with different things. These are what Rachel found whilst out:

Although they aren't the professional types of lighting we thought we may be able to find something to do with these lights to make it look creative. We've took inspiration from a music video we have previously analysed where they use their own lighting in an effective way. This is what were hoping to create:

research- music video inspirations.

We decided to look into music videos similar to our genre and tubechop bits of the video we would  like to use in our music video. This can help us in planning a lot as we know what kind of things to include. These are a few of the videos we would like to take inspiration from:

Lorde- Royals, street shot

Neon Jungle- Trouble, street shot

Lorde- Royals, shot of her singing to the camera

Neon Jungle- Trouble, artist in spotlights

Ariana Grande- Baby I, graffiti board

Katy B- What Love Made Of, slow motion shots used

research- analysis of music videos.

Me and Rachel analysed 2 music videos each in depth, looking at the mise en scene and camerawork and using inspiration from these to put into our music video. Analysing these music videos has helped us a lot and given us more confidence to explore the different conventions in music videos.

research- questionnaire for audience

Me and Rachel decided to make a questionnaire for our target audience to research into what music videos they like and what they watch. This can help us plan our video better as we now know what kind of video's they like so we can make ours similar to the answers given.

We are going to film the responses given and take feedback from it to help film our video.

research- the genre.

When we chose our track me and Rachel needed to think what genre we thought it fell into. There are many different genres a song can fall into and sometimes they have more than one genre.
When we first played our track me and Rachel decided that our track is one of those that falls into a category with many different genres.

When I first listened to the track I thought of it as quite indie but quite RnB too. It is a slow and unique kind of song and I think the stereotypical looking artist for this video would have too look quite unique also and have an urban dress sense, we have a few artist inspirations such as Katy B, Neon Jungle and Aluna George.

Here is one of the artists in our genre we are hoping to take inspiration from:

research- editing in music tracks.

We researched into the different editing used in genre's similar to ours and how these could inspire us to put in our video. We have already researched into some of the mise-en-scene and location we are going to use but we thought it would be helpful to research in depth what editing we can use.

I watched the behind the scenes video for the Katy B video 'Whats Love Is Made Of'. When she is singing in the car, she says they have to make the track faster than what it already is in the actual video and then slow it down when it comes to editing the final piece, because when it comes down to editing the lip syncing doesn't fit right, because otherwise it looks like she is talking in slow motion because of how slow the track is. So we could take inspiration from this video when we are editing and lip syncing our video, especially because our music track is rather slow.

The second video we thought we could take inspiration from is Little Mix- Hey How Ya Doin?, the way they use the transition at the start of the video we thought we could use it in our video as it looks very effective and we could probably fit in into our track as the singer is talking about 'lines' so we could make it link in with that.

research- results of the survey so far.

The results to the survey helped us look into our target audience a bit more carefully. Me and Rachel had already previously discussed our target audience last week and the results found that we was accurate on what we thought our target audience was.
This has now given us confidence to research into our target audience further as we now know we are looking at the right one, we can now continue with our product and aim it towards our audience.

These are a few screenshots of the results gathered:

research- audience survey.

The other day Rachel decided to make a survey to help us identify our targe audience for our music track. It would also ensure that we was aiming our product at the right audience and how we would do this successfully.

Here is the link to the survey:

research- shot types.

Today we looked into a music video in our genre and analysed it in shot types including the distance and angles. We took the chorus from the video and screen shotted all the different shots within that part.

research- target audience for our track.

Our music track is in the electropop/house genre, at the weekend me and Rachel decided to research the target audience for our music track/genre. I made a prezi about our target audience:

planning!

Last weekend me and Rachel decided to meet up and get some planning done for our music video. We managed to think of a lot of ideas that would go well with our music video.

Idea's such as mise-en-scene, location and costume have been thought about but were still not 100% certain on some of the things as they may be difficult to proceed with. We were also thinking about hiring some lighting equipment for our video if we go with the original plan of filming in a house we thought we could use it as a spotlight and just generally as a light to make the place brighter.

We hope the idea's we have come up with will be managable as we feel they go quite well with our music track.

research- coventions of music videos.

As we are getting further into research and planning we have decided we need to research the conventions we are going with that are similar to our music track and what we could use to take inspiration from their videos and which we are challenging, that are different genres but what we have also taken inspiration from.

The artist that is rather similar to ours and we have taken inspiration from is Katy B- What Love Is Made Of. Katy's music is very alike to our track and is the same genre, we have taken inspiration from the part where there is cars surrounding her in the night with their lights on. We thought this would be a good idea to put into our music video as it is very effective. However we may not be able to progress with this idea as we may not be able to find someone with a car.

Another artist we are taking inspiration from is Aluna George, her style is quite quirky and we thought because she has a similar genre to ours we could take inspiration from this to make our actor stand out also. We thought our actor could use a similar style such as the bomber jackets and red lips with big earrings like Aluna George.

We are also challenging conventions by taking inspiration from two songs from the pop genre. Although they are in different genres we thought they would fit well with our track because they use similar resources that we want to use. In the Neon Jungle -Trouble video we thought we could do the same as them where there is a shot of the street to set the scene and also where they use the spotlights we also thought this would be effective to use to single out the actor.

We have also taken inspiration from Ariana Grande- Baby I, in one of the scenes she is stood infront of a graffiti board which we thought would look good in our music video because the graffiti almost matches our genre, as it is kind of street/house music and we also thought it could look effective if we spray painted it with the title of our song or actors name.

expansion on the male gaze theory.

The Male Gaze theory doesn't neccessarily mean you have to be sexy or exciting to be part of it, some characters are seen as innocent yet men still fantasise over them. For example Taylor Swift is seen as someone males drool over but her videos are not very sexual as she tends to cover up most of the time.

Although Taylor shows some flesh she doesn't show as much as some artists such as Rihanna or Katy Perry who most of the time only wear a bra and some hot pants.

Rihanna is an example of one of the characters who is more sexy than innocent. Rihanna's music videos are very provocative and she has a lot of her body on show which is used for the audiences eyes to attract the male population. In her song 'Rude Boy' she is wearing barely next to nothing and gyrating around the room. The lyrics don't really match the visuals however she is dancing sexually and singing about sexual things, for example 'Come here rude boy, can you get it up' because the lyrics are so erotic it means the audience will most likely expect the visuals to be very erotic also. This video is an example of how some women like to tease men to 'come and get it' men find this very attractive in women causing them to 'gaze'.

For success in their music videos most genres have to sell their music by adding sexiness to their videos. We see it in both male and female artists video's whether it is the females who are wearing next to nothing or the males, producers use this as an advantage to help them sell if their artists are the stereotypical 'perfect' person.

The Male Gaze Theory can be seen in three ways: How men look at women
                                                                                 How women look at themselves
How women look at other women.

The camera shots within a music video or a piece of text are as if they are shown from the males perspective upon a woman. The camera captures the females curves and all her 'best' bits which draws in attention from the males. It shows the relationship between the viewer and the viewed, so for example between the males viewing the women on the product.
The females within the product can make the males feel more dominant because of the way they are more quieter yet flirtier. However in some products the women can be shown more dominant than the males for example in Bella from Twilight and The Hunger Games Katness Everdeen show a more braver side to females as they are more likely to hang about with boys and do reckless things whereas any other woman probably wouldn't. Even though these are shown as more dominant males will still most likely find it sexual.

Laura Mulvey- Male Gaze Theory.

Laura Mulvey, a theorist, devised a theory of how certain media is used to please the males eye. There are 4 different types of the male gaze, there is:

The Spectators Gaze: Who is viewing the text, often meaning the audience.
Intra-diegetic Gaze: Where only one person is portrayed in the media text.
Extra-diegetic Gaze: This is where the person portrayed in the text refers to the spectator (audience), also known as breaking the fourth wall.
The Camera's Gaze: Just what it says, this is basically the camera's gaze but is often referred to as the Director's gaze.
By giving a music video or a piece of text this theory it will make it more appealing to men giving it a wider target audience. The music track for our coursework is sung by a female so by giving it that male gaze theory, it will also interest men and be set to a wider audience.

Another part of the Male Gaze theory suggests that women are portrayed as either a virginal innocent character or a sexy 'whore' who acts very provocative. This is called the virgin/whore dichtomy.

research- lyric annotation.

Me and Rachel decided to annotate the lyrics of our music track and what they could possibly mean. This is what we came up with..

Andrew Goodwin's Theory.

I made this slideshare to explain the Andrew Goodwin theory..

My chosen track.

Before the holidays we had to choose a music track we wanted to work on to make a music video and digipak for. When all the tracks were released it was up to us to get the song we liked the most as it was first come first serve. Me and Rachel, who I worked with for the AS task, both decided to go into the resource centre and listen to each track carefully and shortlist the ones we liked. It was really hard to choose from our favourite tracks, but we had to think of which track was most relatable to us and which we could make the best video out of.

There was a lot of different genres to choose from and the majority of them were rather indie/rock tracks, me and Rachel didn't want to choose a track from that genre as we thought it would be to easy to do and also we wanted our video/music track to be unique and memorable. We also thought if we chose a song that was sung by a woman we could find an actress to be in the video for us easier than we could find a male to act for us.

This is the track that we had finally chose from our shortlist:

I really like the track as does Rachel, and we both thought it was similar to the artist Katy B, we thought we could do something similar to her music videos and use her as an inspiration to our work. I am looking forward to working with Rachel again and researching and producing our music video!
