The Male Gaze theory doesn't neccessarily mean you have to be sexy or exciting to be part of it, some characters are seen as innocent yet men still fantasise over them. For example Taylor Swift is seen as someone males drool over but her videos are not very sexual as she tends to cover up most of the time.
Although Taylor shows some flesh she doesn't show as much as some artists such as Rihanna or Katy Perry who most of the time only wear a bra and some hot pants.
Rihanna is an example of one of the characters who is more sexy than innocent. Rihanna's music videos are very provocative and she has a lot of her body on show which is used for the audiences eyes to attract the male population. In her song 'Rude Boy' she is wearing barely next to nothing and gyrating around the room. The lyrics don't really match the visuals however she is dancing sexually and singing about sexual things, for example 'Come here rude boy, can you get it up' because the lyrics are so erotic it means the audience will most likely expect the visuals to be very erotic also. This video is an example of how some women like to tease men to 'come and get it' men find this very attractive in women causing them to 'gaze'.
For success in their music videos most genres have to sell their music by adding sexiness to their videos. We see it in both male and female artists video's whether it is the females who are wearing next to nothing or the males, producers use this as an advantage to help them sell if their artists are the stereotypical 'perfect' person.
The Male Gaze Theory can be seen in three ways: How men look at women
How women look at themselves
How women look at other women.
The camera shots within a music video or a piece of text are as if they are shown from the males perspective upon a woman. The camera captures the females curves and all her 'best' bits which draws in attention from the males. It shows the relationship between the viewer and the viewed, so for example between the males viewing the women on the product.
The females within the product can make the males feel more dominant because of the way they are more quieter yet flirtier. However in some products the women can be shown more dominant than the males for example in Bella from Twilight and The Hunger Games Katness Everdeen show a more braver side to females as they are more likely to hang about with boys and do reckless things whereas any other woman probably wouldn't. Even though these are shown as more dominant males will still most likely find it sexual.
